Bristol City Women FC have appointed Mary Willemsen as the club’s new Sporting Director, bringing one of the most respected leaders in the global women’s game to the club.     Willemsen is best known as the founding architect of FC Twente Vrouwen, where she built the entire women’s football department from the ground up. During her tenure, Twente became a dominant force, winning five national championships, two BeNe League titles, and a KNVB Cup, while establishing pioneering academy pathways that have produced world‑class talent.      Her impact extends far beyond the Netherlands. She led AlUla FC in Saudi Arabia to promotion and delivered a League and Cup double at Etihad Club in Jordan, demonstrating her ability to drive rapid operational transformation internationally.

Globally recognised for her strategic vision, Willemsen has served as a FIFA Technical Leadership Expert, mentoring Technical Directors and instructing on AFC, CAF and OFC Technical Director courses. She is also the founder of Holland Football University and the FootballEquals Foundation, whose academy has produced a generation of elite players, with 80% of its girls progressing into professional football.     Her consulting portfolio includes high‑level strategic work for the Royal Dutch Football Association (KNVB), advising on pathway alignment and league expansion. Her philosophy blends Total Football principles inspired by Johan Cruyff and Louis van Gaal with modern high‑performance coaching, focused on sustainable leadership, on and off the pitch.
Speaking about her appointment, Willemsen said: “What really excites me about Bristol City Women is that it is a pioneering club, who as one of the founding WSL clubs, has formed a pathway for many World class players. With the new ambitious leadership at Bristol City Women and Mercury 13, it is now about designing an exciting future for the club and everyone involved. Building a successful club that inspires and invites people to join this journey, with a clear Robins Pathway at its core.”

Hannah Buckley, CEO, Bristol City Women FC added: “Mary is one of the most accomplished performance leaders in the global women’s game, and her arrival marks a major moment for Bristol City Women. Her track record in building winning environments, developing homegrown talent and transforming clubs aligns perfectly with our long‑term vision. With Mary leading our Football strategy, we are laying the foundations for a sustainable, ambitious future for the club.”     Willemsen started in her role as Sporting Director this week, and will lead the club’s performance strategy, academy alignment, and long‑term football identity as Bristol City Women continue to build a sustainable, high‑performance model for the future.
