Bristol City Women suffered a 2-0 defeat to Charlton Athletic at The Valley in the Subway Players Cup.
Neeve McDonald was dismissed after bringing an Addicks attacker down in City’s box but Lauren Brzykcy stepped up to deny Ellie Mason.
The tide from then however, did turn, as goals from Emily van Egmond and Lizzie Waldie were enough to see Charlton pick up their first win of the season.
City Women boss Charlotte Healy also handed senior debuts to Ella Smith and Chloe GIddings as the pair were introduced in the second-half.
Healy’s side started brightly in SE7 enjoying large spells of possession but were forced into an early change as Eilidh Shore made way for Malaika Meena.
Karen Mills’ Charlton were the first to test a keeper, as Jodie Hutton’s close-range header was directed on target but City’s Brzykcy was alert to the danger.
Hutton continued to look dangerous in the first-half recording a total of four attempts at goal but was unable to convert for the home side, seeing the tie level at the break.
Mills’ three changes at the interval sparked life into Charlton causing trouble for City’s defence which saw Neve McDonald bring Cassandra Korhonen down in the box.
McDonald was dismissed for the error but it was Brzykcy who proved pivotal for City as she dived well to her left to deny Mason an opener from the spot.
With pressure mounting it wasn’t long before the inevitable and Emily van Egmond prodded home from a Charlton set-piece in the 77th minute.
Lizzie Waldie doubled the advantage for Charlton just four minutes later heading home from close range.
Emma Bissell continued to probe for City as she fired efforts towards goal but they were well met by Koivunen to secure a clean sheet for the home side.
