City suffer defeat at Ashton Gate.

Bristol City suffered a 1-0 defeat against Newcastle United in their first home fixture of the season.

The Magpies found the opener from close range as Katie McGovern tapped home in a near empty net.

Maria Farrugia and Lotta Lindström caused trouble for the visitors throughout but were unable to find the back of the net.

Farruiga was one of two changes from last weekend’s defeat in Sunderland as Lauren Brzykcy was also selected between the sticks.

It was a bright start in BS8 for Charlotte Healy’s side as The Robins went in search of their first points of the season.

Katie Robinson carved out City’s first chance of the afternoon, delivering to the back post from out-wide, while Farrugia was just inches away from tapping home.

The Maltese international came again for City, this time striking an effort on target, albeit it was well dealt with by Anna Tamminen.

Newcastle had chances of their own prior to the break through Beth Lumsden but Brzykcy did well to deal with the danger on both accounts to see Healy’s side level at the break.

City’s best attempt at a response came through skipper Emily Syme, who flashed an effort on goal from outside the area which Tamminen was equal to.

Healy used all five substitutions in an effort to find a leveller but it never came for The Robins.

City head to newly promoted Watford next on Sunday, September 20th.
